Audi A3 40 TFSI better than its predecessor

The Audi A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e joins the list of plug-in hybrids from Ingolstadt and the A3 family itself. Structurally, everything here is similar to the hybrid from the previous generation - the A3 Sportback e-tron, and even the catalog combined power of the system (204 hp, 350 Nm) is preserved. The 1.4 TFSI turbo engine produces the same 150 hp. and 250 Nm, as before, but the electric motor is more powerful: now 109 hp. against the previous 102 hp with the same maximum torque of 330 N•m.

The new version will go on sale in Germany in autumn with a starting price of 37,470 euros, excluding government incentives for green car buyers.

The new hybrid can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h without starting the internal combustion engine, while the maximum speed of the predecessor in all-electric mode was 130 km/h.

The electric motor is still integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch S tronic, but the new motor is lighter and more compact than the old one. Acceleration from zero to hundreds of the new hatchback is the same as the previous one - 7.6 seconds, but the maximum speed has increased from 222 to 227 km / h. And, of course, the main difference from its predecessor is the lithium-ion traction battery. In the hybrid Audi A3 of the previous generation, it had an output of 8.8 kWh, while the five-door A3 40 TFSI e, following the Golf eHybrid, receives a new unit with an output of 13 kWh.

The hybrid allows "one-pedal" driving, as when the gas pedal is lifted, the electric motor goes into recuperation mode, develops up to 40 kW as a generator and provides deceleration of up to 0.3 g without using conventional brakes.

This change dramatically affected the mileage without starting the internal combustion engine. The old model boasts a NEDC range of 50 km, while the new generation has a NEDC range of 78 km, an increase of 28 km. Under the more sophisticated WLTP standard, the hatchback only has 67km on current, which is enough for many buyers for everyday zero-emissions driving.

In addition to purely hybrid functions, the hatchback, like its siblings, allows you to choose from a range of driving programs: Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual.

From a conventional 230 V household outlet, a depleted hybrid battery is charged to 100% in just over four hours (charging power 2.9 kW). The customer also receives an e-tron charging service card, which provides access to 150,000 charging points in Europe.

40 TFSI e always starts electrically down to -28 °C. In addition to forced switching to pure electricity, battery hold and battery charge modes can be selected via the MMI system. The first saves the available charge in the battery, giving preference to the internal combustion engine, the second intensively recharges the battery on the go. Combined fuel consumption in the NEDC cycle of the new hybrid is 1.4-1.5 l / 100 km (versus the previous 1.5). Electronics controlled by external sensors and navigation help to save fuel. For example, he tries to stop the internal combustion engine more often during free movement.
