With the all-electric models of the new ID family, the Volkswagen brand is continuing its strong electrification campaign, but at the same time is starting to introduce completely new and innovative hybrid drive systems to its range. With triton 48V eTSI mild hybrid drive systems and two new plug-in hybrid systems in the Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE, the best-selling Golf is part of Volkswagen's most diverse hybrid range. Thus, along with the new all-electric ID.36, which will be available with different battery sizes, Volkswagen will be able to offer one of the most systematic and permanently electrified compact car products worldwide.
Golf eTSI with first ever 48V mild hybrid drive
The new 81 kW (110 hp) Golf 1.0 eTSI and 110 kW (150 hp) Golf 1.5 eTSI models are now on the market, equipped with Volkswagen's first 48-volt mild hybrid system (eTSI). Both motors impress both with their power and efficiency, thanks to the additional electric propulsion their dynamic performance is at an extremely high level. By the end of 2020, another 48-volt mild hybrid version with 130 hp will be added to them. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG) is standard on all versions of the Golf eTSI and will be available on the Life (Practical), Style (Complex) and R-Line (Sport) trim levels.
Two new plug-in hybrid powertrains
Two new plug-in hybrid models, the Golf eHybrid and the Golf GTE, will debut on the market in the coming days. These versions of the new Golf are equipped with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and have a power output of 13 kWh, up to 50% more than the plug-in hybrid version of the previous seventh generation Golf. The two plug-in hybrid models can be powered independently of the electric motor or the TSI turbocharged petrol engine with its high torque, or together with both engines.
New Volkswagen Golf eHybrid
The new Golf eHybrid hybrid drive system develops a maximum system output of 150 kW (204 hp). This Golf variant offers an extremely high level of equipment and is particularly suitable as a convenient, comfort-oriented plug-in hybrid model. Reaching 80 kilometers, the total autonomy is an impressive 870 kilometers (both measured in accordance with NEDC requirements).
The Golf GTE is also remarkably economical, but its main focus is on high dynamics and sporty handling on the road. With it, the hybrid system delivers a maximum system output of 180 kW (245 hp) - in practice, the combined efforts of the traction engine and the TSI petrol turbo engine achieve the same power level as the current Golf GTI. The all-electric Golf GTE can travel up to 62 kilometers with a power consumption of 12.4 kWh. The total autonomous range in this version is 745 kilometers (all three GTE values are measured in accordance with NEDC requirements).
Much more economical than its predecessor
Comparison of the new Golf eHybrid and the Golf GTE version of the already superseded seventh generation Golf, which has exactly the same output (150 kW / 204 hp), shows just how economical the new plug-in hybrid models really are. The new Golf eHybrid achieves a combined fuel consumption of 1.2 l/100 km as mentioned above - 11.0 kW of power consumption in accordance with NEDC standards. This means a reduction in fuel consumption of 0.7 l / 100 km and a reduction in energy consumption of 1.1 kWh / 100 km, respectively, for the seventh generation Golf GTE. Autonomous range now reaches 80 km, which is also a significant improvement compared to 47 km on the previous Golf. GTE: The total mileage of the new Golf eHybrid has also increased to 870 kilometers compared to the previous 760 kilometers.
